How Often Should you Update your SEO?
One of the most common questions we hear at our Brisbane SEO agency is: “How often should you update your SEO?”
Our answer? SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) isn’t a “set and forget” exercise – and that’s exactly why most SEO agencies and professionals (including us!) work on ongoing, monthly arrangements.
Google and Co are constantly evolving (AI anyone?!). Your competitors are constantly changing. And your business? Well, of course that changes too! If your SEO stays static while everything else moves, it won’t take long before your rankings – and those all-important enquiries – start to slide.
What about one-off SEO packages?
Here at Front Page SEO, we do offer a “one-off” Starter Package, but it’s important to understand what it’s designed for.
Think of it as a fast-track option. We compress around six months’ worth of foundational SEO work into a six-to-eight-week period. It’s not intended to be a standalone, forever solution – it’s about setting your website up properly from the start.
That foundation typically includes:
- Keyword research – identifying relevant, achievable keywords your business actually has a chance of ranking for
- Onsite optimisation – placing those keywords in the right spots on your website and improving technical elements for a better user experience
- Offsite optimisation – kicking off a link building strategy to help grow your site’s authority and trust
Why SEO is Like Gardening
From there? SEO maintenance is a lot like gardening 🌱
We like to explain SEO using a garden analogy (because it makes sense).

The Starter Package is about preparing the soil and planting the seeds. Will they grow and flourish? Well, that depends entirely on the after-care!
For best results, SEO needs regular:
- monitoring
- feeding and nourishing
- pruning and tidying
- weeding when problems pop up
Occasionally, an established website in a low-competition niche may see solid results from foundational work alone (a Starter Package). It was quite common when I started providing SEO services back in 2012 but that’s becoming increasingly rare.
Just like a real garden, SEO performs best when someone is checking in regularly, filling bare patches with fresh web content, topping up the soil with updated links, and nurturing both quick wins and longer-term keyword goals.
After all, avocado and macadamia trees take years to bear fruit – but farmers still plant them, knowing the long-term rewards are worth it! SEO works the same way – once it starts working, it can keep bearing fruit for many years.
How Often Should You SEO When You’re at #1?
What about when you’re ranking really well? How often should you update your SEO then?
Just like with gardening, the work never stops! However, we can drop back to a maintenance plan which is less aggressive. In fact, we have some long-term clients who are now on this type of SEO package. It’s one way we reward them for their loyalty, and the reality is – once your business is at the top of search engine results, it doesn’t need as much effort to keep it there.
